Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

“So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound–think of it–for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?” And when He said these things, all His adversaries were put to shame; and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him. – Lk 13:16-17

Jesus healed on the Sabbath, in the middle of the synagogue. There was a woman who had been bound by a “…spirit of infirmity eighteen years” (v 11). Jesus saw her, called her to Him, and said, “Woman…you are loosed” (v 12). Immediately she stood upright, having been healed, and glorified God.

We see three important themes in this text:

1) There is no “bad” day to be healed. God heals every day of the week. Whether you are in church on a Sunday, at work on a Tuesday, or home in bed on a Thursday at midnight, God can heal you! The religious leaders were angry with Jesus because He did not heal on their terms, or on their schedule. God does not respect our preconceived notions: only His preordained promises!

2) Satan – not God – was the author of this woman’s sickness. Luke, who recorded the healing, noted the woman was bound by a “spirit of infirmity” (v 11). Jesus further explained that Satan – not God – had bound the woman (v 16). Jesus was present to release her. Sickness is not, as some suppose, a punishment from God. It would make no sense for Jesus to have spent his entire earthly ministry healing everyone He encountered, only to have God re-employ sickness as a punishment after Jesus died on the Cross! Sickness is from Satan; healing is from God.

3) This woman was healed because she was a daughter of Abraham. She didn’t have to work for her healing; she simply had to receive her healing in the presence of God. Healing was part of her inheritance. If you have given your life to Christ, “…then you are Abraham’s seed, and [an heir] according to the promise” (Gal 3:29). Just as healing was part of this woman’s inheritance, healing is part of yours!

Jesus is your Healer. Trust Him and receive divine health!

Prayer:

Father, You are my Healer! Healing is not just something you do; it is who you are! I know that now is as good a day as any to pray for my healing. I am going to praise You in advance until it comes!
