Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
In spite of this they still sinned, and did not believe in His wondrous works. Therefore their days He consumed in futility, and their years in fear. – Ps. 78:32-33

In the days of quarantine and coronavirus, these are two conditions that hit close to home: futility and fear. Futility means you are unproductive. No matter how hard you try to work effectively, you’re not really getting anything done. Fear means you are scared of what might come tomorrow, instead of hopeful because you look towards God’s promise in faith.

But did you know that futility and fear are not your portion? In Psalm 78:33, the Israelites were consumed with futility and fear: not because they were supposed to live like that, but because they had forgotten about God. They, “…did not believe in His wondrous works” (Ps. 78:33). When we forget who God is and what He has done, we lose faith; and our lives are overcome by futility and fear.

Refuse to accept futility. Refuse to accept fear! Remind yourself of all the times God has come through for you. Pick up your Bible and read about all the times He has come through for His people! You will be filled with fruitfulness and faith; and you will say goodbye – once and for all – to futility and fear

Father, thank You for fruitful faith! I will be effective in my work today, in Jesus’ name. I will be faithful in my prayers today, in Jesus’ name! I will hope for the promise, instead of fearing the future. You have done great things for me, and that will never change, in Jesus’ name!
