CityLight Pastor Commentary:

“You shall do the same with his donkey, and so shall you do with his garment; with any lost thing of your brother’s, which he has lost and you have found, you shall do likewise; you must not hide yourself” (Deut 22:3). If it is within our capacity to restore any lost thing to a brother or sister, we must do it. Jesus stopped for the one, and we must do the same. Sometimes that means stopping to restore something of value to the people around us. Common courtesy is easily lost in large metropolitan areas. We see people drop a subway card or slip and fall, and we rush by them as if we don’t notice. Yet when the same thing happens to us and nobody stops to help, we can’t help but be infuriated because nobody cares! When was the last time you saw a New Yorker go out of his or her way to do something compassionate for a complete stranger, no matter how simple? If the answer is anything but ‘today,’ it is within your power to do something about it.

Prayer:

Father, make me compassionate! If I can be a restorer of dignity, material possession, or compassion to anyone around me today, help me to do it. I will wait on Your Holy Spirit to lead me and guide me into the path You have laid out for me!
