Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

…by the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established. – Deut 19:15

When someone tells me, “I don’t believe in God,” I respond by asking, “Do you believe in the Cross?”

The Cross, as a historical event, has been well established. Secular historians have confirmed that a man named Jesus Christ hung and died on the Cross. Flavius Josephus, a Jewish historian, refers to Jesus’ death in his work, Antiquities of the Jews (Book 18, Chapter 3, Verse 3). Tacitus, a renowned secular historian of ancient Rome, wrote around AD 115 that Jesus Christ was executed by Pilate in his work, The Annals (Book 15, Verse 44). Neither man was Christian, so neither had anything to gain by reporting Jesus’ death. Why would they lie?

Old Testament Law requires that a matter must be established by two or three witnesses. In addition to secular historians, we have all the Old Testament prophets who prophesied about Jesus; four different accounts of His life from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; all of Jesus’ disciples bearing witness to His death and Resurrection; and the accounts of numerous eyewitnesses in Scripture. Isn’t that enough?

Whether or not Jesus died on the Cross is not up for debate. What you do with that information, however, is up to you.

Father, help me to believe in the Cross! Your Son Jesus Christ came and died for all my sins. He served as a Sacrifice so that I could enjoy the reward only He deserves! Thank You for showing me grace and favor, all my days.
