Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. – Gen 19:26

God supernaturally rescued Lot and his entire family from Sodom. Angels from heaven descended into the city to warn Lot that he had to leave because God would destroy it. Lot took his time, and doubted the urgency of God’s instructions. Even as they were fleeing, Lot’s wife looked back and longed for the city.

When Lot’s wife looked back at Sodom as God led them away, she turned into a pillar of salt. Perhaps she wondered if God would really destroy the city, and doubted His command to leave. Perhaps she was concerned with the material possessions she left behind to follow God. Whatever her motives, the message is clear: if we cannot move forward in the Lord’s calling without looking back longingly on our sinful past, we are nothing more than a pillar of salt. If you look to the past you will be dry and immobilized; but if you hope for God’s future, you will be rich and full of life.

God will do what He promised. Trust Him and move forward; never look back!

…forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. – Phil 3:13-14

Prayer:

Father, help me to trust in Your word. I want to move forward in everything You have for me. Help me to never look back, in Jesus’ name!
