Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
When they blow both of them, all the congregation shall gather before you at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. But if they blow only one, then the leaders, the heads of the divisions of Israel, shall gather to you. – Num. 10:3-4

God told Moses to make two trumpets. When he blew them together, the whole nation of Israel would come together. But if he blew only one, only the leaders would come. Some calls were for everyone to answer; but other calls were only for a select few. Why is this important?

Moses had an inner circle, and an outer circle. This reality has implications for both 1) information sharing and 2) decision making:

1) Information sharing. Sometimes Moses called on everyone; and sometimes he called on only a few. You don’t have to tell everyone your business! In fact, it is better to keep most things private. Imagine if Moses told everyone what God only wanted him to tell his leaders? The result would have been disarray and disaster. This is especially important in the age of social media. You don’t owe everyone an explanation! You shouldn’t tell everyone everything that’s going on in your life. Save the details for your inner circle.

2) Decision making. Some decisions should be made by the whole congregation! Others should only be made by the leaders. You don’t need to take a public poll to make a private decision in your life. Build relationship with several key people who can help you make decisions. And stop caring what people who aren’t close to you think about the decisions you make!

Who is in your inner circle? Perhaps more important, who is not?

Father, thank You for surrounding me with good friends. Thank You for cultivating people in my life on whom I can rely to make important decisions! You are amazing, and I am so grateful, in Jesus’ name.
