Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
According to the commandment of the Lord they were numbered by the hand of Moses, each according to his service and according to his task; thus were they numbered by him, as the Lord commanded Moses. – Num 4:49
God asked Moses to number His people. He didn’t just count the people of Israel; he numbered them. There is a difference! To count simply means to know how many there are; but to number is to intentionally specify who does what.
God doesn’t just count His people; He numbers them! Every person has a specific purpose! Every child of God has a specific plan! God’s people were numbered: “…each according to his service and according to his task” (v 49). God made you you on purpose! Everyone has a part to play in expanding His kingdom. He knows who you are, where you are, and why you’re there! You were not created to be a copy; you were created to be an original!
It gets even better. Under the Old Covenant, God’s people were numbered; but under the New Covenant, He calls us by name!
…and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. – Jn 10:3
God knows you. He created you with a purpose, on purpose; and He calls you by name! You are not just one of millions of Christians; you are God’s child, and He loves you more than you can ever imagine! Hallelujah!!
Prayer:
Father, thank You for calling me by name! You created me to love me; and you formed me to know me! Thank You for taking a vested interest in every single moment of my life, in Jesus’ name.
