Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” But after that no one dared question Him. – Mk 12:34

A scribe approached Jesus, and commented on God’s commandments. Jesus saw that he answered wisely; this man knew all he needed to know about Scripture and God’s will! But despite all that head knowledge, Jesus said he still hadn’t reached the kingdom of God. He wasn’t far…but he wasn’t there.

Knowing about God is different from knowing God. The scribe had accepted Jesus in his head; but he had yet to accept Him in his heart! Mere intellectual assent is not enough. We must open our hearts and let Jesus in: fully and completely. God wants to relate to you personally, and intimately. Knowing He exists is different from speaking to Him face to face (Ex 33:11)!

Only eighteen inches separate your brain from your heart; yet it is this small distance that makes the difference between death and life. Won’t you invite Jesus into your heart this morning? He doesn’t just want your head; He wants your whole heart! And when you give Him your heart, you will enter the kingdom of God.

Prayer:

Father, I invite Your Son Jesus Christ into my heart this morning! I accept Him as my Lord and Savior. I want Him as Lord over my life. I don’t want to just know about Him with surface-level faith; I want to know Him intimately in a way that inspires deep, life-changing faith!
