Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. – Matt 5:38-41
This is where the phrase “going the extra mile” comes from! Do you have people in your life who need you to walk with them through something difficult? To be available for prayer at any time of the day? To offer emotional and monetary support until they can get back on their feet?
When they ask you to go one mile, go two. Are you willing to go the extra mile for people you don’t like? For people who don’t deserve it? To love and serve radically, simply because Jesus asks you to? God has given us so much more than we deserve through the Cross of Jesus Christ. Are you ready to treat others the same way?
Prayer:
Father, help me to go the extra mile for the people You have called me to love and serve in my life. I don’t want to be stingy! I don’t want my love for others to grow stale! Help me to exercise love every day, by loving others the way You have loved me.
