Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no strife between you and me, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren. Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left.” – Gen 13:8

Abraham valued peace over possessions. Look at Abraham’s response to conflict in verse 8: “Please let there be no strife.” Abraham didn’t argue over what belonged to whom. He didn’t fight to make sure his best interests were represented. He told Lot he could have whatever he needed. He nipped the issue in the bud immediately, regardless of what it might cost him. Abraham knew he was blessed, and he knew there was plenty of blessing to go around (v 9)!

Our aim as children of God is to live at peace with one another. If we have all the money in the world, but can’t have peace with our brother, we really have nothing at all!

Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. – Matt 5:23-24

Because Abraham made peace a priority, the Lord blessed him with so much more.

Father, help me to value peace over possessions. I know there is plenty of God’s goodness to go around! I don’t need to fight for it; I only need to receive it, in Jesus’ name!
