Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

“I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing” (Gen 12:2). We all want to be blessed. We are heirs to the promise of Abraham through faith in Jesus Christ (Gal 3:29), and our inheritance includes material blessing when we need it (please note, however, that there is a difference between wanting and needing).

God will bless you with everything you need to accomplish the unique calling He has put on your life. This is Biblical prosperity. God’s promise to bless us does not imply the ability, on our part, to simply point at whatever we want and expect Him to deliver it to us. However, His promise does include a guarantee that we will never have to worry about our needs being fulfilled (see Matt 6:25-34).

Note the reason God blessed Abraham: He blessed him so that he could be a blessing to others. Do you want to be blessed for yourself? Or do you want to be blessed so that, like Abraham, you can go out and bless others? When we seek God’s blessings simply to retain and possess them, without passing them on, His favor will prove elusive. But when we seek to bless others, God’s blessings with chase us down!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for blessing me! Just as you called Abraham to be the father of many nations, You have called me to be a blessing not only to the city in which I live, but also everywhere I go! Bless me, in Jesus’ name, so that I can be a blessing to others!
