Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull, they gave Him sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink. – Matt. 27:33-34

As Jesus hung on the Cross and died for your sin, bystanders tried to numb the pain. They offered him “sour wine mingled with gall,” which was a concoction designed to take the sting out of death. But Jesus refused. He refused to dull the impact of the pain God had called Him to bear on the Cross. He refused to do anything but everything He was destined to do. Wine and gall would have deadened the pain Jesus felt on the Cross; but He chose to feel every ounce of pain. Why? So that you and I would never have to.

Jesus went all the way. In one infinite moment, He experienced an eternity of suffering for all mankind. He died with perfect holiness and purity in your place on the Cross. He refused to deaden the impact of the man’s sin. He refused to cheapen the price of obedience by making His death on the Cross any easier than it was meant to be.

Jesus went all the way. He refused to sell out and cheapen the calling of God on His life. And in response, are you willing to live your life completely and fully for Him?

Father, make me Your devoted servant. I am so grateful that Jesus took every ounce of pain I could ever be made to feel on the Cross. He did it because I never could. And in response, I insist on living a life of complete and total devotion to Him!
