Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in trouble… – Ps 31:9

Mercy belongs to God. He gives it away as He pleases. He puts mercy on His people so they can get through what they are facing in a position of victory! Grace is God giving you good things you don’t deserve; and mercy happens when God holds back the bad things you do deserve. We should know how to pray for both!

Several years ago a woman in our church got in trouble with the police. She had done something blatantly wrong. She knew it; but she was trying to deny it. Her stance in prayer was to pray for justice; but I told her it was time to pray for mercy instead!

When you mess up – and you know you messed up! – cry out for mercy. Even when you deserve punishment, remember that Jesus already took your punishment on the Cross. Repent, and exercise the mercy of God. Watch Him get you out of situations that should be impossible to fix. When He does, don’t use it as a license to sin! Use it as a testimony: proof that even when we fall short, God is always there in His infinite mercy to set us on our feet again.

Father, thank You for Your mercy! I have bad days. Sometimes I mess up! But I thank You that Your mercy never fails.
