Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. – 1 Tim 4:16
What you preach is important; but what you practice is too! A minister with a good message is effective; but a man without the character to support the message is powerless. To focus so much on doctrine that you neglect character is an error; but when you allow God to build a foundation of solid character, the effectiveness of your ministry to others will multiply!
To “take heed to yourself” is to practice self-care. Stay healthy: physically, spiritually, socially, and emotionally. Make time to spend with God! Open your Bible all day, not just to prepare for Sunday. A healthy minister is best: not only for himself, but also for his congregation!
You are the most effective minister of the Gospel when you are healthy and whole. Pray that God would refresh and encourage you, in Jesus’ name!
Prayer:
Father, I ask that You would refresh me, in Jesus’ name. Cover me with Your mercy. Cloak me with Your favor! Fill me up with Your presence and Your power, in Jesus’ name!
