Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“As for the prophet who prophesies of peace, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, the prophet will be known as one whom the Lord has truly sent.” – Jer 28:9

Hananiah (v 5) professed to be a prophet. He claimed to hear from God! But Jeremiah wanted to know his track record: do the things you prophesy actually come to pass?

There are two implications here:

1) There should be a record of prophetic accuracy for men and women who claim to occupy the office of a prophet. Does what (s)he speaks out actually come to pass? If not, it’s time to seek the Lord and figure out what’s missing.

2) Every New Testament Christian is called to embrace a prophetic lifestyle. The Bible says that you are prophetic![1] We were built to hear from God. He will tell us things to come before they happen![2] When you think you hear from God, write it down. Then, come back and see if what you recorded actually happened! This is called prophetic accountability.

If you notice an imperfect track record, don’t panic! Emotions can interfere with hearing the word of God. Your own wants and desires can muddy the waters of God’s destiny and design for your life. Revisit what you think you heard, and ask God what you’re missing. Trust that He will show you any changes He wants you to make, so you can hear from Him more clearly than ever!

Father, I ask that You would bless me with prophetic accuracy in Jesus’ name! Help me to accurately convey the words You speak through me. I pray that what I hear from You would never be influenced by what I want to hear! Whatever You give me, I will speak; in Jesus’ name!
