Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
For I bear witness that according to their ability, yes, and beyond their ability, they were freely willing… – 2 Cor 8:3
The Apostle Paul had good things to say about the “churches of Macedonia” (v 1). His highest praise? That they gave, “…according to their ability, and beyond their ability” (v 3).
When you give, do you exercise your faith? Do you only give what you can spare? Or do you give to God, “…beyond your ability?” It sounds irresponsible, doesn’t it? How can you give to God what you don’t have? Yet by giving to God, you are demonstrating that you believe provision is coming.
There was a time I was praying for a raise. I started tithing on my “new” salary, months before it was ever confirmed. Sure enough, several months after I had increased my tithe, I got a call into my boss’s office. He was giving me a raise to match the amount I had been tithing.
When you give, exercise your faith! Show God you’re serious and you believe He will provide! Give not according to where you are, but according to where you want to be. And watch God honor your decision.
Prayer:
Father, help me to exercise my faith when I give. I don’t want to give from a place of ability; I want to give beyond my ability. I know that as I do, you will meet me with provision in that place!
