Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Therefore I praised the dead who were already dead, more than the living who are still alive. Yet, better than both is he who has never existed, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun. – Eccl. 4:2-3
Solomon had a lot. He had “greater possessions of herds and flocks than all who were…before [him]” (Eccl. 2:7). He gathered “silver and gold and the special treasures of kings” (Eccl. 2:8). But he didn’t have Jesus. And without Jesus, his life was meaningless. Here was the wisest man to ever live (1 Kings 4:30)! Yet he struggled with an unshakeable notion that his life was absolutely without purpose.
If you don’t have Jesus, your life will feel meaningless. God designed it that way! Why? Because He wants you to search for Him. He put eternity in your heart (Eccl. 3:11); and unless you find Jesus, you will live your life with a void that feels like it can never be filled. An itch you can’t scratch! A craving you cannot satisfy.
Even if you have it all, without Jesus you have nothing. But in Jesus, you will be full! You will finally know fulfillment. You will know what it feels like to wake up in the morning and be filled with purpose! God created you to know Him. Are you ready to respond to His invitation?
Prayer:
Father, I don’t want to drift through life any more without meaning and purpose. I am ready to stop running and start seeking You! Thank You for designing me to know You. Thank You for perfectly filling the God-sized hole in my heart, in Jesus’ name.
