Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You. Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” – Job 42:5-6
Job had heard about God. He had planned out in intricate detail what he would say to God if he ever met Him face to face. He knew how he would defend himself to prove to God that he didn’t deserve the lot in life he had received.
But once Job saw God, everything changed. You see, it’s one thing to hear about God with your ear; it’s another thing altogether to see Him with your eyes. There is nothing like an encounter with Jesus! There are two implications as we read this verse:
1) For you: What you need is an encounter with Jesus. Reading books about Jesus just won’t cut it any more! Meet Him for yourself. Spend time in prayer. Meet Him in His word! You cannot live vicariously through someone else’s relationship with God. You must meet Him for yourself.
2) For others: Don’t just tell other people about Jesus! Introduce them to Him. Whenever you have a conversation with someone who has never met Jesus, get to a point of prayer (PoP). Ask them how you can pray, and invite Jesus into the room. This is by far the most effective form of evangelism available to us. When you invite Jesus, He shows up!
Finally, notice Job’s immediate response to a God encounter. He repented! If we want our nation and our world to repent of evil, we need to lead them into a genuine encounter with the Jesus who came to save them.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for face-to-face encounters with You! I am so unworthy of Your presence. Yet You allow me to experience You all the same. I’m asking that You would give me daily encounters with You, full of power and love, in Jesus’ name!
