Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. – 1 Cor 2:1
The Apostle Paul was one of the world’s greatest evangelists. But he didn’t try to convince anyone to believe in Jesus. He knew he wasn’t going to win anyone to the Lord with a flawless argument, or with “excellence of speech!” Instead, He made a decision to simply demonstrate the power of God, and invite people to respond.
And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power… – 1 Cor 2:4
When you tell people about Jesus do your words have power? Does the Holy Spirit move? Empty words – no matter how wise! – will do nothing; but a power-packed declaration of God’s goodness will change hearts and lives.
Pray with people who need Jesus. Invite the Holy Spirit to move in that moment, and change their situation. One powerful prayer can change more than a lifetime of excellent speech!
Prayer:
Father, make me an effective evangelist. I’m asking You to make my prayers powerful! When I pray, I want to plunder the devil’s work. I want to take back territory in the hearts of Your people that rightfully belongs to Jesus! I don’t want my words to be wise; I want them to be powerful, in Jesus’ name.
