Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“When they sin against You (for there is no one who does not sin), and You become angry with them and deliver them to the enemy, and they take them captive to a land far or near…” – 2 Chron 6:36

In this verse, Solomon is praying to God. He is dedicating the beautiful and ornate temple at Jerusalem which had just been completed. Solomon is asking God to remember His people, and to hear their prayers, especially when they sin. Notice that Solomon does not pray, “If they sin against You,” but he prays, “When they sin against You (for there is no one who does not sin)” (v 36).

You will sin against God. No man or woman is exempt! But what will your response to sin be? When you sin, what will you do? Will you turn from God? Or will you cry out to Him and ask Him to forgive you and change you?

Solomon finished his prayer like this:

…yet when they come to themselves …and repent, …and when they return to You with all their heart and with all their soul …, then hear from heaven Your dwelling place their prayer and their supplications, and maintain their cause, and forgive Your people who have sinned against You. – 2 Chron 6:39

When you confess your sin to God, He is faithful to forgive your sin (1 John 1:9). When you turn back to Him with all your heart and all your soul, He forgives you, no matter how serious the sin!

You will sin. But when you sin, how will you respond?

Prayer:

Father, change my response to sin. When I mess up, I run from You. But I don’t want to do that anymore! I want to run to You, knowing that You will forgive me, and that You are still my biggest fan!
