Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works… – Rom 4:5-6
When you work for God, it is counted as debt; but when you believe in Jesus, it is accounted as righteousness.
Righteousness – right standing with God – is achieved by faith, not by works. There is nothing you can do to earn God’s affection. The only way to get in His good graces is by believing in Jesus (“Him who justifies the ungodly,” v 5). Your salvation has nothing to do with what you’ve done, and everything to do with Whose you are. When you belong to Jesus – no matter who you are, where you’ve been, or what you’ve done – you are a child of God!
Prayer:
Father, thank You that I don’t have to work for righteousness! I recognize that righteousness is a gift; and all I have to do to activate that gift over my life is believe in Jesus. Help me to believe in Him, with all of my heart, in Jesus’ name!
