Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And God was displeased with this thing; therefore He struck Israel. – 1 Chron 21:7

God was displeased! David took a census and counted the men in the armies of Israel. He did it to prove his own strength, instead of relying on God’s. David sinned; but God didn’t force David to sin. In fact, it wasn’t even David’s idea. Satan was the one behind David’s plan:

Now Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel. – 1 Chron 21:1

Any time sin occurs, Satan is ultimately responsible. David participated, but Satan was the architect. Any time we are moved to do anything contrary to God’s will, Satan – not God – is the author. We must stop attributing the work of the enemy to God! God will not make you sin to teach you a lesson. He will not give you sickness or disease to bring you closer to Him! Sin, sickness, and death are all the work of the enemy – not God!

Here is the good news: God has given you authority over Satan through Jesus Christ:

Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. – Lk 10:19

You don’t have to fear Satan; you get to crush him, in Jesus’ name!

Prayer:

Father, help me to recognize that Satan is the author of all evil. You have nothing to do with evil, because You are good! Remind me that I have authority over the enemy that I get to exercise every day, in Jesus’ name.
