Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now when much time had been spent, and sailing was now dangerous because the Fast was already over, Paul advised them, saying, “Men, I perceive that this voyage will end with disaster and much loss, not only of the cargo and ship, but also our lives.” – Acts 27:9-10
Paul was not a sailor. Yet because he was filled with the Holy Spirit, he knew exactly what was coming: even more so than the men who made their living by sailing! Paul – a prisoner – confidently advised these professional sailors because God had shown him what would take place.
God’s wisdom exceeds years of expertise in any craft. Paul “perceived” that if they set sail, the voyage would not end well. To “perceive” is the Greek thereo (Strong’s #2334), which means to look at or behold. The same way Jesus “saw” what God wanted Him to do (Jn 5:19), Paul saw what God wanted him to see!
The same Spirit who opened Paul’s eyes will open yours. You don’t have to be the most-experienced, or the best-trained; you simply have to hear from God. When you have His heart, you have all you will ever need.
Prayer:
Father, open my eyes to see what You need me to see! I want to be like Paul. I want to know what’s coming, in advance, so I can live my life accordingly, in Jesus’ name!
