Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. – Gen 39:2

Joseph had a bright future. He was his father Jacob’s favorite son, and would someday inherit everything Jacob owned. But then his brothers betrayed him. He was cast into a pit and left for dead. Then, he was sold into slavery and carried to Egypt by a band of Midianites.

Yet through it all, God was working. God knew that one day Canaan would experience a famine, and Jacob and all his house would need food. God knew that Pharaoh had the land and people to produce crops in abundance. All God needed was an entry into the Egyptian palace; so he used Joseph’s captivity as the perfect opportunity to place Joseph as the chief administrator over Egypt, to be in charge of everything Pharaoh owned.

God truly works all things together for our good. This is not to say that God caused Joseph’s captivity; this was clearly the result of the actions of wicked brothers and a lack of discretion on Joseph’s part (maybe he should have kept his dreams to himself). Yet God used everything Joseph’s enemies intended for evil, for good.

God will do the same for you. He will cause you to prosper through the most unlikely circumstances; and it will be your joy to give Him all the glory.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. – Rom 8:28

Father, thank You for working all things together for my good! I will not fear because You are God, and You are with me. You can take any situation and use it for Your glory!
