Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

Be angry, and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still. Selah. – Ps 4:4

The Bible does not say we should never get angry. God wants us to be zealous for the things of God! He wants us to get angry at the same things that make Him angry! If sin doesn’t make us angry, we lack the passion He requires.

Where God draws the line is acting out in our anger. We are to be angry, but never at God. We are to hate sin, but never the sinner: to hate the action, but not the person behind it. We are never to let our anger interfere with forgiveness. We are to be angry, but never sin.

David reveals the way to deal with anger effectively: to meditate within our hearts on our beds, and be still. In other words, we should leave any situation that angers us, and immediately bring it before God. We should take our anger and our frustration directly to God in prayer, and ask Him to deal with our hearts!

God wants our burdens. He wants to know when we’re angry, and when we’re fed up. He wants us to put the heaviest burdens in our lives squarely upon His shoulders. And when we do, He promises that He will give us His rest:

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” –  Matt 11:28-30

Father, I pray that my anger would never turn into sin. I pray that I would never value my right to be angry over my duty to forgive. Give me the courage, and the patience, to bring everything in my life before Your throne. Remind me to ask for Your help!
