Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now these were the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before a king reigned over the children of Israel: Bela the son of Beor, and the name of his city was Dinhabah. – 1 Chron. 1:43

There was a time when the people of Israel had no king. God’s original intention has always been that we would look to Him instead of a man to lead us:

“You shall be My people,
And I will be your God ” – Jer. 30:22

But looking to God wasn’t enough! Having Him as our King wasn’t sufficient. We looked around at the land of Edom, and saw they had a king; and we wanted one for ourselves:

Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.” – 1 Sam. 8:4-5

God granted our wicked request. And ever since that fateful day, we have looked to man instead of God. We look to presidents and congressmen and women. We look to celebrities to show us how to act and tell us how to think! We read the news instead of our Bibles. And it shows. Instead of being front and center, we have pushed God to the side.

But here is the good news. There was once a time when Israel didn’t have a king. They looked to God instead of man! And if it has been done, we can do it again. Stop looking to man. Look to God! He will protect you. He will lead and guide you! And He will teach you how to love Him just as He loves you: unconditionally, and without fail.

Prayer:

Lord, I don’t need to look to man. I will look to You! I am so grateful for You, my King. I will look to You and You alone, from this day forward, in Jesus’ name.
