Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

But Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands, and said, “Let us not kill him.” – Gen 37:21

Reuben could have kept silent; but he spoke. He could have let his brothers have their way and kill Joseph; but he intervened.

Being a good brother means standing up for the defenseless, no matter the cost. When we see calamity approaching, it is our responsibility to rescue those who need rescuing. Without Reuben, Joseph’s story would have been cut short. Are there people in your life whose deliverance is riding on your willingness to intervene?

Jesus rescued you when you needed Him. Are you willing to rescue others when they need you?

But [Jesus] answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.” – Matt 12:48-50

Father, fill me with strength and conviction to stand up for people in my life who need help. I want to defend the defenseless. I want to help the helpless! I want to be hope to the hopeless. Send me!
