Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. – Acts 16:16

Paul and Silas were on their way to pray. All of a sudden, a “slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination” met them. She followed them, and started to scream and cry out. She distracted them. She annoyed them. She upset them!

The evil spirit attacked “as [they] went to prayer.” It is no coincidence that the enemy goes on the offensive when you go to pray! His goal is to distract you. He wants to annoy you. He wants to upset you! Satan knows prayer is powerful, and he wants to keep you from getting God’s work done!

Here is how Paul dealt with the distraction:

But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour. – Acts 16:18

Do not let Satan steal your prayer life. Tell distraction to leave, and invite the presence of God’s Holy Spirit! Protect and prize your time in prayer. It is the most valuable time you have.

Prayer:

Father, I pray You would protect my time in prayer. Help me to have healthy boundaries so that nothing and no one can steal my time in prayer! I thank You for powerful prayer, in Jesus’ name.
