Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And he went up and lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands; and he stretched himself out on the child, and the flesh of the child became warm. – 2 Kings 4:34

Read this passage and think about how strange this scene was. Here is Elisha, the prophet of God who had received the “double portion” (2 Kings 2:9) of Elijah’s anointing. A Shunammite woman’s son had just died suddenly, and Elisha was about to raise him back to life. But how he did it was so strange! He “lay on the child.” He “put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands!” Think about the absolute uproar something like this would cause in 2020 if a prophet “lay on” a dead child!

But Elisha was willing to do whatever it took to heal the boy. And we see why as Elisha arrives on the scene in verse 33:

He went in therefore, shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the Lord. – 2 Kings 4:33

Elisha arrived to find the dead child. He didn’t know what to do! So he prayed. And God told him. God told him to, “…lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands” (v. 34)! Elisha didn’t worry about what other people would think! He just did what God asked him to do. And the boy came back to life.

God wants to heal people through you. He wants to bring dead souls back to life. Will you practice radical obedience to see it happen? Will you do whatever it takes, no matter what anyone else thinks?

Prayer:

Father, make me radically obedient. Whatever You ask me to do, I want to do! I’m asking that You put Your miracle-working power on display in and through me, in Jesus’ name.
