Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

Then King Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place, and committed them to the hands of the captains of the guard, who guarded the doorway of the king’s house.

– 1 Kings 14:27

King Rehoboam was defeated. He drifted from the ways of God, and everything he had was stolen. The king of Egypt came into Jerusalem and took all the city’s treasures away. Solomon’s gold shields were stolen; but instead of confessing his defeat and turning to God for restoration, Rehoboam tried to hide what had really happened.

The gold shields were stolen, so Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place. He constructed a counterfeit to keep up appearances. Had Rehoboam repented, and turned his heart to God to ask forgiveness, God might have restored the gold shields. Yet Rehoboam valued appearances more than reality. He thought he could hide his heart from God.

Are you allowing a counterfeit to stand in the place of what the enemy has taken from you? When we seek God with our whole heart, God will give us true gold: priceless riches in the form of a restored relationship with Him. When we forsake appearances to pursue Him, He will restore everything the enemy has taken from us!

Return to the stronghold, you prisoners of hope. Even today I declare that I will restore double to you. – Zech 9:12

Prayer:

Father, help me to worship You in spirit and in truth. I want to seek You with my whole heart. I’m done trying to maintain appearances. I want more of You, no matter the cost!
