Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“And when forty years had passed, an Angel of the Lord appeared to [Moses] in a flame of fire in a bush, in the wilderness of Mount Sinai. When Moses saw it, he marveled at the sight; and as he drew near to observe, the voice of the Lord came to him…” – Acts 7:30-31

As Stephen recounts the history of God’s people in Acts 7 and tells the story of Moses, he makes an important observation: Moses drew near. The Angel of the Lord appeared to Moses in a flame of fire in a bush. God clearly wanted to tell Moses something! But Moses had to stop what he was doing, and draw near to 1) look (“observe”) and 2) listen. It wasn’t until Moses drew near, that the voice of the Lord “came to him.”

Drawing near is such an important principle. God can show up time and time again in your life; but if you never draw near, you will never hear what He has to say! Too often we ask God to fit into our schedule: to show up during our prayer time. But we forget to make time to draw near when He wants to speak!

God wants to move through your life. He will show up at pivotal moments to communicate confidence in you, and direction to you. When He reveals Himself, are you ready to stop, look, and listen?

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. – Jas 4:8

Father, help me to make room to draw near. Remind me to leave open space every day to simply spend time with You: to draw near, and hear what You have to say!
