Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him. – 1 Sam 22:2
David was in trouble. Saul wanted to kill him, and the Philistines didn’t trust him. He needed an army: quickly! So whom did God send?
“…everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontended…”
David needed an army, but the outcasts showed up. David needed strength, but the weak showed up. David needed provision, but the needy showed up. But God would use these men to build the foundation of Israel’s future army.
These “outcasts” would become David’s “mighty men” (see 2 Sam 23:8-38). The lesson for us? When God sends someone to help, don’t discount him (or her!). Your “help” may not come in the package you expected; but God solution will be so much better than you ever expected!
But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence. – 1 Cor 1:27
Prayer:
Father, I know You always have a plan – even when I don’t. I trust You. Send whomever I need, whenever I need them. I trust they will be more than enough.
