Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
So David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved wisely. And Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants. – 1 Sam 18:5
David was already anointed to be king; but he still had to behave wisely. He still had to patiently rely on God as His promises unfolded. He still had to steward the promise well!
Wisdom attracts the promise of God. Service accelerates the promise of God! While David was selflessly serving Saul, God was positioning him to win the hearts of the people of Israel. No matter what Saul did, David refused to get frustrated. No matter how long it took for God’s promise to unfold, David refused to get impatient! As David behaved wisely, God prepared him to become king.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for every word You have spoken over me! Help me to steward Your promises well. Give me the patience to rely on Your word and behave wisely as Your will unfolds over my life.
