Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“Therefore the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever.’ But now the Lord says: ‘Far be it from Me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.’” – 1 Sam 2:30
God’s word is conditioned on your response. God had promised Eli’s ancestors that his family would “walk before [God] forever!” But their lack of faithful obedience canceled the promise. They forgot about God; and the hardness of their hearts caused them to drift from God’s plan for their lives.
It wasn’t that God changed His mind that He wanted to give Eli a promise; it was that Eli changed his mind that he wanted to receive God’s promise.
Eli didn’t get a second chance, because the Cross hadn’t happened. But here is the good news for you: Jesus died for your sin! He died for your lack of faith! He died for your disobedience! And when you return to Him (Jer 3:22), God’s promise will be re-activated over your life!
For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. – Rom 11:29
God wants to bless you! Will you say yes, and receive?
Prayer:
Father, soften my heart. Turn my heart of stone into a heart of flesh! I want to live my life according to Your promise. I never – EVER! – want to drift away from Your plan for my life. Bless me, in Jesus’ name.
