Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

They were near Jebus, and the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “Come, please, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites and lodge in it.” – Judges 19:11

In Judges 19, a Levite returned to Bethlehem. He stayed with his father-in-law and made ready to leave and return home with his concubine; but then the day got away from him. In those days, it was dangerous to be trapped outside in the dark. If you got caught outside a city, you were as good as dead. As the sun was setting, the Levite’s servant suggested they turn in to Jerusalem to spend the night; but the Levite stubbornly insisted they keep moving (v 12).

A disastrous string of events sprang up from the Levite’s stubbornness. They were caught outside, with no place to stay. Cruel men abused the Levite’s concubine; and the atrocities those men committed were so bad that the entire nation of Israel fell into civil war when they heard the news. And the worst part? It could have all been avoided. If the Levite listened to his servant, they would have found lodging with plenty of time to spare! But he refused to listen, and calamity followed.

The stubborn man speaks; but the wise man listens. God put wise men and women in your life on purpose! Are you listening to them?

Prayer:

Father, thank You for putting wise men and women in my life! Remind me to listen to them at all times. Chip away at my stubbornness, in Jesus’ name.
