Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
A wise man fears and departs from evil, but a fool rages and is self-confident. – Prov 14:16

The mark of wisdom is a healthy dose of skepticism in your own abilities. The mark of a fool is “self-confidence” (Hebrew batach[1]): excessive trust in your own abilities that leads to carelessness.

  • The fool says, “I can do this myself!” But the Gospel says, “I can’t do anything without Jesus’ help!”
  • The fool says, “I’ve got this because I’ve been here before!” But the Gospel says, “I need God more than ever before!”
  • The fool says, “I can do anything!” But the Gospel says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Phil 4:13).

You might be good; but God is better. Be confident in Him – Christ in you! – and not in yourself.

Prayer:
Father, I am confident in You! You are the Beginning and the End. I don’t even know the beginning from the end! I am making the decision today to trust You, more than I trust myself, in Jesus’ name!
