Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“Also I said to you, ‘I am the Lord your God; do not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.’ But you have not obeyed My voice.” – Judges 6:10
Israel was surrounded by enemies on all sides. When God’s people were obedient, He protected them. He covered them with His grace. He fought off their enemies with His strength! But when God’s people forgot about Him, things changed.
It wasn’t that God sent the enemies; it was that His people wandered outside the bounds of His covering. It certainly wasn’t that God became Israel’s enemy; it was that His people chose to make themselves susceptible to attack by wandering off God’s path!
God is not your enemy! He doesn’t create calamity; the enemy – Satan – is the author of that. God wants to protect you. But in order to stay under His covering, you have to obey His voice. If you want to have His hand of protection over your life, you have to go where He calls you to go, and do what He calls you to do!
When there’s a tornado, what do you do? Do you run out in the middle of a field and say, “It’s my life, I can do what I please?” No! You stay inside. You pick a building with a solid foundation, and stay safely tucked away. God’s word is the strongest foundation you can find. So stay inside His plan for your life where it’s safe and sound!
Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you… – Ps 91:9-10a
Prayer:
Father, keep me from evil. Help me to always stay under the shadow of Your wing, and in the palm of Your hand. Help me to be obedient, so that I never have to fear the work of the enemy, in Jesus’ name!
