Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Rejoice the soul of Your servant, for to You, O Lord, I lift up my soul. – Ps. 86:4

Scripture tells us to “rejoice…always:”

“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” – Phil. 4:4

But what about the days when you don’t feel like rejoicing? How do you keep your soul in a posture of rejoicing when everything around you seems like it’s spiraling out of control?

Ask Jesus for help. Look at the request David makes of God in Psalm 86:4: “Rejoice the soul of Your servant.” David is admitting that rejoicing is not something we can do for ourselves; rather it is something God has to do through us. Don’t try to rejoice! Ask God to rejoice you. You don’t have to rejoice on your own! But you do get to yield and allow God to rejoice through you.

If you lift up your soul to God, He will rejoice your soul. If you turn to Him in prayer, He will make you glad! He will rejuvenate you and fill you with the strength you need to face your day. Trying to do it yourself, versus allowing God to do it through you, is the difference between hell and heaven on Earth! Whatever God has called you to do: allow His Holy Spirit to do it through you.

Father, I thank God You never call me to change on my own. You never call me to rejoice on my own. You never ask me to do anything on my own! I am filled with Your Holy Spirit; and that means You will do it all through me, in Jesus’ name.
