Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.” – Lk 17:3-4

Jesus calls us to have radical relationships. He calls us to radical honesty, radical repentance, and radical forgiveness:

1) Radical Honesty. Be up front and honest with the people around you. If someone “sins against you,” don’t sweep it under the rug; instead, “rebuke him!” Tell him what he did wrong, and explain why you are offended. The purpose of the rebuke is not to get him back; it is to encourage repentance and reconciliation.

2) Radical Repentance. If someone calls you on your sin, repent. Own it, and make a change. To repent means to ‘change one’s mind‘ (Strong’s #3340). How can you become more like Jesus if you’re not willing to change?

3) Radical Forgiveness. If your brother repents, forgive him. Even if he sins against you seven times in a day, “…you shall forgive him” (v 4). God has forgiven us! Now it is our job to go out and forgive others.

Father, thank You for honest and open relationships! I want to be radically honest. When I am in the wrong, I want to own it and repent! When I am offended, I want to forthrightly forgive. Thank You for the courage to be radical!
