Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“Get up, sanctify the people, and say, ‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the Lord God of Israel: “There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you.”’” – Josh 7:13
Israel had just won an amazing victory at Jericho. God’s people, “…shouted with a great shout,” the wall around the city fell down flat, and “they took the city” (Josh 6:20). But when they tried to conquer Ai – a much smaller city – they were snubbed. Why would God give them victory in one city, but not the other?
There was sin – “an accursed thing” – in Israel’s midst. God reminded them: “…you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from you.” Israel didn’t need a new strategy. They didn’t need a new plan! They needed to deal with their hearts.
Self-examination is a key to walking in victory. It’s about what’s inside; not what’s outside! If you are going to be victorious in front of your enemies, there are certain things that just have to come out!
Prayer:
Father, I invite You to deal with my heart. If there is anything in me that needs to change so I can walk out a life of victory and purpose, change it! If there’s anything that needs to come out, take it out. You have permission to make me thoroughly victorious, in Jesus’ name!
