Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the best places, saying to them: “When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you.” – Lk 14:7-10
God will put you exactly where you need to be. Wouldn’t you rather sit in “the lowest place” (v 9) and have Him raise you up, than seat yourself “in the best place” (v 8) and have Him thrust you down?
The way to promotion is humility. Choose to serve instead of wanting to lead. Choose to listen instead of insisting on speaking. Choose to do the hard things, instead of taking the easy way out!
Jesus, “…humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (Phil 2:8). If the God of the Universe was willing to do that for us, shouldn’t we be willing to do that for Him?
“For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” – Lk 14:11
Prayer:
Father, I choose humility. I want to position myself in the lowest place. If even Jesus chose the lowly place, how much more should I! Help me to make the right choice, in Jesus’ name.
